Fender Benders Suck.

And so do nasty people.  Just when I was walking out the office door with a co-worker, I was telling her how everything with the house was going well, but that all I was waiting for was one thing to go wrong.  I get into my car (music on loud), I look both ways (I see my co-worker waiting for students passing by at a distance), no one is near me so I decide it's time to pull out.  Just when I'm pulling out, another car pulls out at the same time I am.  We bump.  No damage to my car.  I damaged hers-more like scratched it.  Paint got on hers.  She rubbed it off.  We spoke.  She waited to decide on whether or not she wanted to call campus police.  She decides she wants to, in fear of bumper rusting.  Um, the bumper won't rust.  It's plastic.

Police came.  Um, can we say, hot campus police guys? I immediately turned on the charm.  They smiled. I smiled.  She wanted their advice on whether or not to file a report. To make a long story short, she did not.  In all seriousness, I was scared.  I was nervous.  I was afraid it WAS my ENTIRE fault.  I admited that it was.  But we went home without a filed report and agreed she could buff it out on her own and be ok.

She called me this morning, and I went by to see her.  She had gotten several detailing estimates and picked the cheapest.  I was grateful.  However, I began to think last night that it wasn't totally all my fault but since I had already said that it was, I didn't want to go back on my word.  She got an estimate of her car detailing of $75 this morning and at lunch it was $95-$20 more because the detailer said the paint would chip if he did not paint.  She wanted a check right away today so she could drop her car off in the morning on the way to work.  I called her back and said that after much thought, I didn't think it was totally my fault and I would be willing to pay $75, not the full $95.  She said she had witnesses and I was going back on my word and that she could go file a report and put points on my insurance if I wanted to make things harder.  She knew I had just bought a house and knew I didn't have any money.

Thanks, bitch.

I started to cry over the telephone and said I wasn't trying to go back on my word or be nasty to anyone.  Then said I would just pay the full amount and that I couldn't get the check to her today.  She said "Ok" and hung up.

I would just like to say that I feel like crying right now.  I haven't slept in weeks because I'm stressed over the house, etc.  I'm not trying to screw anyone over, and I'm certainly not trying to be dishonest.  If anything, I am thankful that she didn't file the report or go through insurance, and I'm certainly thankful that she isn't HURT.  My goodness....

She sounds like a nasty person and you know what they say about karma. I'm just glad it wasn't any worse. If you do pay her I would make her sign something that she is waiving any future claims against you and your insurance and write "payment in full" on your check. Just to cover yourself.
