I decided to start learning more about my heritage a little at a time. Last weekend, while visiting with Dwight and Shanna, we stopped at a local Vietnamese restaurant in Atlanta for a little "snack" before going home to make Mexican Tacos! We ordered a bowl of soup. It is called "Pho" in Vietnamese. Dwight ordered the seafood pho, Mom ordered chicken, and I ordered beef. This was my first time trying Vietnamese cuisine that I remember. We had friends years ago that lived in Savannah that were Vietnamese. They had invited us over for dinner, but I don't recall eating the food. I don't think an extremely shy and picky eater would have EVER tried the food! =)
Anyway, my beef pho wasn't bad. I am not a fan of boiled beef. Mom's chicken was boiled but it was too dry. They had such beautiful, lovely herbs piled on a plate to put in your soup to enhance the flavors. Mmm, it was good. It was especially yummy with the fresh lime juice! However, by no means could we eat this "medium" bowl. It was HUGE!
Today, I did some reading online. I learned that one of the fruits is 5 or 6 times larger than a cantaloup and it is spiky and the scent is strong and horrible....until you taste the sweet flesh. It is called Durien.
Here are some pictures of my Vietnamese food experience. While there, I spoke with the owner and learned a few words in Vietnamese like "mother" and "thank you."

My friend at work is married to a guy from Vietnam and she brings in all sorts of stuff for me to try. You might like Lychee and Jack Fruit.
